Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is home to a permanent population of over 200 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. You can spot them any time of year. However, certain months and specific times of day provide much better conditions for viewing and photography.
What time of day is best for dolphin watching?
Early morning trips offer the highest chances of dolphin sightings.
The winds are usually calmest early in the day. Book a boat tour that leaves Shimoni around 7:30 AM. As the wind picks up later, the water gets choppier. This makes it harder to spot dolphins in the Dolphin Channel.

What are the best months for Kisite dolphin watching?
Visit between December and March for the calmest seas and highest visibility.
The park is open all year. However, December to March provides the most favorable conditions. The Indian Ocean is usually very calm during these months. Sea temperatures remain warm, ranging from 25°C to 30°C.

Where are the dolphins located in the park?
Dolphins are most frequently seen in the Dolphin Channel.
This channel consists of deeper waters near the reef edge. Motorized dhows and speedboats pass through this area. The journey from the Shimoni jetty to the main coral gardens takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Can you swim with the dolphins at Kisite-Mpunguti?
You cannot swim directly towards or chase the dolphins.
The park enforces strict responsible dolphin watching guidelines. You must maintain a respectful distance in the water. Sometimes, dolphins swim alongside the boats naturally. Hand-feeding the dolphins is strictly prohibited.

Are there other marine mammals to see?
Yes, humpback whales migrate through the park seasonally.
If you visit between July and October, you might spot humpback whales. They migrate through the same waters as the resident dolphins. The whales usually stay in the deeper channels off the Kenyan coast.
How do tides affect dolphin watching?
Tides dictate boat departure times from the Shimoni jetty.
The water levels at the jetty determine exactly when boats can launch. Tour operators schedule morning pickups to align with favorable tides. Pickups from Diani Beach usually happen between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM.

Questions travellers ask
Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?
No. While over 200 dolphins live in the area, they are wild animals. Early morning departures give you the best chance, but sightings are never guaranteed.
How long is the boat ride to the Dolphin Channel?
The trip from the Shimoni jetty to the reef takes 30 to 45 minutes. You will typically pass through the Dolphin Channel during this crossing.
Do I need to pay extra to see the dolphins?
No. Dolphin watching is included when you transit through the park. You only pay the standard park entry fee (USD 25 for non-resident adults) and your boat or tour costs.
